A Board Member’s Journey: Amplifying Voices at the Kentucky Equal Justice Center

As a Lead Organizer at Kentuckians for the Commonwealth (KFTC), Bonifacio “Flaco” Aleman integrates social work, critical race theory, and intersectionality into his community organizing efforts. With nearly two decades of experience, his passion for justice and advocacy runs deep. In addition to his work with KFTC, Flaco serves as a Client Board Member at the Kentucky Equal Justice Center (KEJC), where he brings his personal experiences and professional expertise to the organization’s mission.

Joining the KEJC Board: A Full-Circle Moment

Flaco’s connection to KEJC began long before he took on his board role. He first encountered the organization as both a collaborator and a client. Notably, KEJC co-represented him in the landmark case Flaco v. Beshear, which sought the restoration of former felons’ voting rights in Kentucky. This legal experience made Flaco eligible to serve as a Client Board Member, allowing him to bring his unique perspective to the table.

When it was suggested he join the board, Flaco saw it as a natural progression in his ongoing commitment to justice and equality. His admiration for KEJC’s mission made it an easy decision to accept the role.

Embracing Leadership: Roles and Committees

In his capacity as a Client Board Member, Flaco ensures that the voices of those most impacted by the issues KEJC tackles remain at the forefront of discussions and decisions. He also serves on KEJC’s Racial Justice Committee, where he collaborates with KEJC employees and other board members to promote racial equity and justice. Flaco’s extensive experience in community organizing and social justice provides invaluable insights into the work KEJC does.

Highlights of Serving on the Board

One of the most memorable experiences for Flaco in his time with KEJC was attending a staff and board retreat. This retreat allowed him to connect with staff members on a deeper level, learning more about their work and finding shared values that help further KEJC’s mission. For Flaco, the retreat was a powerful reminder of the commitment and passion that drives everyone at KEJC.

What he enjoys most about serving on the board is the opportunity to stay closely involved with KEJC’s incredible work and contribute to the organization’s growth. The sense of shared purpose and community within KEJC reinforces his dedication to advancing social justice in Kentucky.

Life Outside of KEJC: Family, Academia, and Advocacy

Outside of his role with KEJC, Flaco leads a busy and fulfilling life. He is the father of four children—two adults and two in elementary school—and a grandparent. Currently in his third and final year of doctoral studies in social work, Flaco’s academic focus is on coping strategies for formerly incarcerated individuals, with a particular emphasis on advocacy and activism.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Flaco continues to advocate for social justice through public speaking, writing, and organizing. He regularly delivers presentations at academic conferences, contributes opinion pieces, and speaks at various rallies and events. His work spans a range of issues, from education, energy, and climate justice to voting rights restoration for justice-impacted individuals.

Looking Ahead

For Flaco, serving on the board of KEJC is a natural extension of his lifelong dedication to advocating for the most vulnerable and ensuring that their voices are heard. As he continues his journey with KEJC, he looks forward to contributing further to the organization’s impactful work and advancing its mission to create a more just and equitable Kentucky.
